San Antonio is The Alamo City

San Antonio is famous for its River Walk, the Alamo, and Tejano culture.
It is home to both the Sea World and Six Flags Fiesta parks. The city is visited by approximately 26 million tourists per year. It is a surprisingly large city with almost 2 million people living in and around the area in a sopa grande of language, culture, and historia.

San Antonio Riverwalk

In 1691, a group of Spanish explorers and missionaries discovered the beautiful river and Native American settlement there. It was June 13, the feast day of St Anthony, so they named the place and river "San Antonio" in his honor.

The Spanish government later approved a site on the river for construction of a presidio (fort). They also approved a request to establish a Catholic mission at the site. The original mission was later moved to Alamo Plaza because of flooding.

Spanish mission

The Battle of the Alamo took place there in 1836. This was where 189 defenders, both Mexicans and settlers, were besieged in the old mission against 4,000 Mexican troops led by Santa Anna. The defenders were
all killed in the final assault.

The famous battle cry "Remember the Alamo" became the big emotional rallying point of the Texas Revolution. Many Mexicans fought on the side of the Texas independence forces, including Juan Seguín. He was elected to the Texas senate following independence, and later served as mayor.

The Alamo

The Alamo is a former Roman Catholic mission and fortress compound. It is maintained as a shrine and museum located in the heart of downtown, and is surrounded by many hotels and tourist attractions. It is the city's best known landmark, and is featured in its flag and seal and in the nickname "The Alamo City." Across the street from the Alamo is the world famous Crockett Hotel, named after the pioneer Davy Crockett.
