Smoking cigars is a symbol of luxury and sophistication. Although smoking is now considered bad for your health, many people continue the habit. This includes famous people like
Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek,
and King Juan Carlos of Spain. Even sexy latinas like Daisy Fuentes and Lisa Guerrero enjoy them. Many people consider the pleasure worth the risk.
Cigars have always been a big part of latin culture.
Christopher Columbus discovered this when he first arrived in America more than 500 years ago. He found the native indios smoking tubes of rolled tobacco leaves. Fascinated by this, the Spaniards took them back to Europe. At first it was considered a form of witchcraft. Now the practice has spread throughout the world. It has become an important industry for many countries, especially in Latin America.
Latinos make the best puros in the world. There is no doubt about it. Whether you prefer the rich flavor of Cuban or the milder taste of Mexican, there is nothing better. The Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Nicaragua each produce more than forty different brands. Many people consider the Dominican Macanudo brand to be excellent. They are milder than Cubans with a silky smooth flavor. Today there are many different sizes, strengths, and flavors. My personal favorite is the Te Amo brand from Mexico.
Perhaps the most famous brand is Cohiba. The name comes from the Taino word for tobacco. The Cuban brand is filled with leaves that go through an extra fermentation process. It was originally a private brand made exclusively for Fidel Castro. Often given as diplomatic gifts, the Cohíba name developed a special status over the years. U.S. President Kennedy hoarded thousands of them before he imposed the trade ban on Cuba.
Castro decided to release them for sale to the public when the
1982 World Cup
was held in Spain. With the nationalization of the Cuban tobacco industry after the Revolution, many growers left the island. They began growing tobacco with Cuban seeds in the Dominican Republic and Honduras. Many took the brand names with them. Now there are versions of Cohiba, Montecristo, and several others also produced outside of Cuba. Ybor City in Tampa, Florida, was at one time the cigar capital of the world with more than 70 factories.
Smoking a good cigar is like
making love with a sexy latina.
They have a hot fire burning deep inside a sweet mellow skin. You must draw out the flavor slowly and gently to truly enjoy the experience.
Unlike cigarettes, you do not inhale the smoke. Just take it gently into your mouth, taste the flavor, and blow it out again. Like a good cup of coffee, it is very relaxing and yet very stimulating.
If you have some time this weekend, grab a cerveza and enjoy one.
