Concern for the
environment and our wildlife
is a big issue these days.
Viviane Castro,
the carnival queen from Brazil, recently paraded nude
in Rio
with “vendese” painted on her body to protest the commercial development of our natural resources. We all are thinking about ways to
preserve and protect our planet. Everyone wants to make sure that our children and grandchildren enjoy the wonderful things that the world has
to offer. But beautiful places like
the Amazon rainforest
are in danger of disappearing forever.
Global warming is probably the issue that we hear most about in the news every day. The observation is from recent studies showing that average temperature of the air and the water on earth is increasing. There are numerous debates about why this is happening and what it means for
our future. The most obvious evidence of this can be seen in the trends
for women’s underwear.
Other scientific studies are blaming the temperature increase on more industrialization. In other words, having more cars, more factories, more cities, and more people is changing the world. Some natural events like
volcanoes
and variations in the sun also have an impact. Scientists are not real sure what this all means and what we can do about it. Of course, now that a lot of politicians are involved this complicates things even more.
The biggest concern is how a change in the climate will affect our oceans, our wildlife, and our natural resources. Global warming may cause the sea levels to rise. It may also change or destroy valuable natural resources like
our rainforests.
This would certainly be a bad thing for many plants and animals. Some will be threatened with extinction.
Our environment is a very, very sensitive thing. Humans have a tremendous impact on the planet. We need to learn how to balance our need for progress with our responsibility to care for the earth. Our actions today will affect the lives of everyone, both now and for many generations
to come.
